Built on the sloping shores of Lake Ontario, Toronto is arguably the cultural centre of the country -- though some would argue for Montreal, or Ottawa... whatever side you decide to pick, Toronto is for sure a global megacity unlike any other, and it is definitely one of Canada's most important cities. It is also one of the most populous, not only in Canada, but in the whole of the North American continent. It really is not hard to have a great date in Toronto -- in fact, if anything, it is hard not to. Wherever you go, be it the ultra trendy west side, the popular eastside such as Leslieville, or the downtown core where you will rub shoulders with the rich and famous, there is almost too much to do in Toronto. Check out Church Street around Wellesley for gay bars galore, or stick with the Entertainment District if you fancy fine dining and museums, but whatever you do, prepare to have more fun than you thought possible in this welcoming and fun loving city that is unlike any other.

History Of The Toronto Dating Scene

The start of the date scene in this city can be traced back to 1793, when Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe decided in his wisdom to shift the main settlement of Upper Canada to Toronto, a town that back then he gave the very original name of York, since he could probably not pronounce the actual name of the place given to it by the people who already lived there. Fast forward to 1797, when a bunch of troops moved to Fort York down by the harbour. They all had a lot of fun going on dates, and before you knew it, 140 different languages were being spoken in the hundreds of restaurants, bars, and clubs that sprang up to meet demand between the 18th and 20th centuries. The 21st century saw the start of a great expansion of the city into other areas, as the bipolar weather situation oscillated between sweltering heat and neck-biting cold. Today, the dating scene in Toronto consists of a huge array of date venues, from restaurants, bars, and clubs to festivals, fed by immigration and the Pan-Am Games. There is more to it than that, though, as you will discover if you carrying on reading our guide to the best date ideas in Toronto.

Best Times To Go Out

toronto03

You can always find something to do in this city, whether it is 5 am on a Monday or 2 pm on a Thursday, or quite frankly any time at all on any day of the week. In fact, it has been suggested that Toronto add an 8th day to the week, so that it makes it harder to find something to do, thereby increasing demand for the already overly populated date venues that cater for the dating crowd during the extant week days. Quite why anyone thinks that this is a good idea is not known, though it would take considerable pressure off of Saturday night, which is quite hectic, but a lot of fun if you want a date night you can't quite remember. The museums are open all day, every day, from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, although some museums do close later than that; check the websites for more information.

Date Ideas In Toronto: Directory

From gay bars that never close to museums that don't always open, there is so much to do in Toronto that it makes other cities feel like giving up. Where the city lacks in green spaces, it makes up for it by the sheer number of bars, restaurants, clubs, and shops that sell old canoe paddles and teddy bears wearing checked flannel shirts.

Woody's

Type
Gay bar
Space
Huge gay bar with dance floor
Crowd
College to middle aged
Address
467 Church St, Toronto, ON M4Y 2C5
Website
Any Notes
Open 1 pm to 2 am. TTC operates all night
Brief Description
This is quite frankly the biggest gay club in TO's gay village, and with live DJs & men's competitions during the week, and raucous events that last the entire weekend, you simply cannot find a more lively gay club. It has a whopping 5 bars to drink at, meaning that you can do a respectable bar crawl without even leaving the building. Do keep an eye on your date though -- not because they may get poached (although maybe) but because this place is so mind bogglingly hug that you might find that a simple trip to the restroom results in hours of trying to find each other. It was for this reason alone that cell phones were invented by Professor Rogers in the late 1800s, so make sure that yours is charged and that you have been paying your bills, otherwise you might find that your outgoing calls have been suspended, and then you might not find your partner among the other revellers until the end of the night, when all the chairs get picked up and turned upside down on the tables, and the empty bottles and glasses are swept into the street. Woody's is a true TO tradition on the LGBT scene, so go and check it out if you want a really bumping gay date in the city.

Brief Description
If you feel like riding an elevator up a 553.3 metre high concrete communications and observation tower right at the core of downtown Toronto, then you might want to check out the CN Tower, which is one of the best ones, if not the only one. Once regarded as one of the 7 wonders of the modern world, the CN Tower is probably the city's proudest and most easily recognizable landmarks, other than... one of the other ones. You can always tell where you are in the city by looking for the CN Tower: If it is to the south, you are in the north; if it is to your east, you are west; if it is in the west, then you are in the east; if it is in the north, you are in the lake. Photo opportunities abound; if you walk right to the base of the CN Tower, you are likely to get poked in the eye with a selfie stick, so do watch out for the tourist crowd. Different times of year see the CN Tower lit up in different colour schemes; keep an eye out for its Christmas colours in December for a memorable festive treat that you and your date will cherish. There is also a restaurant at the very top of the CN Tower where you can get all manner of things to eat and drink, such as sandwiches and coffee, and the views are simply stupendous -- it is said that even on the cloudiest day, you can see every single one of Toronto's other famous landmarks other than the CN Tower.

Quick checklist to see if you are in a restaurant in Toronto: Buddha head in window? Check. Fancy sofa no-one's apparently allowed to sit on? Check. Total absence of children? Check. This place doesn't let you forget that you are in TO, but it most certainly does not make you regret it, either. There is a trend in this city towards pan-Asian a la carte, and this place really does deliver on its promise to cook up just that. It does all the things you would expect it to, from Thai dishes to Dim Sum delicacies, and all served by friendly staff in a neutral space. The best thing about this place is that it does a lot of gluten free bits and bobs -- in fact, most of the items on the menu have a gluten free option, and the all you can taste menus are just divine. All you can taste is a slight change on the old all you can eat trope, in that you get slightly smaller dishes than you might usually get, but this means that you can try out more dishes, which in a pan-Asian a la carte place is a great deal. This is a top rate choice for a date venue.

Brief Description
With its water side Artisan Market, and options that range from pleasant strolls to braving the Scarborough Bluffs, checking out the floral displays at the Music Garden and catching some live music at Molson Amphitheatre, there is a lot to do on a romantic date to this huge and iconic body of water that contains part of the Canadian and US border, right where no-one can get to it. Bask at the Sunnyside Pavilion at any time of the year (summer). Take a trip out to the Toronto Islands if you and your date want to experience Toronto from a completely different point of view and escape the city for a few hours -- just make sure that you go when the islands are not flooded. Lake Ontario is one of Toronto's proudest features, and the harbourfront is well worth a visit, since it is notably less busy that the rest of the city and provides ample walking and dining options along its shores.

The Royal Ontario Museum used to be an amazing 5 totally different museums which were assigned a single use: archaeology, geology, mineralogy, palaeontology and zoology. They were joined into one great over arching museum way back in 1955. Here you will find the city's biggest collections of art galleries, global culture and natural history exhibits as well as incredible dinosaurs at the Libeskind crystal wing. If you want to see Romanesque Revival architecture, as well as Byzantine Revival architecture, then this is the place to bring your lucky date. A great place to stroll around before dinner.

A Gothic Revival style castle with gardens in midtown, Casa Loma is one of the city's most memorable structures, sitting proudly on a hill overlooking sections of neighbouring areas. Built between 1911 and 1914, and designed by Annie Lennox, Casa Loma was created for the municipal government, and later was used towards sonar research efforts during WWII. The house and gardens are well worth a visit and are a memorable setting for a date.
